Monstera deliciosa houseplant in morning sun

Houseplants and light

Light is the single most important need of houseplants. To quote James Wong @botanygeek:

”Plants are essentially living biological solar panels…”

So understanding your light and how much a plant needs is critical to the success of your indoor jungle.

Bright indirect light is generally 1-2 metres away from a window. Another metre in and your light levels drop by more than half.

Likewise, having your plants too high has them reach for the light and grow straggly and bald on top. I’m looking at you Strings of basically anything!

Learning how best to serve your plants is part of the fun. Know your space, know your plants.

Can you:

  • Lift (or drop) your plants to the best height to capture the light.
  • Watch to see how that space changes as the light drops in autumn and winter.
  • Add a grow light to supplement a space that is begging for plants but doesn’t have the optimum lighting.
